Effects of Thermal Bridging on R-Value

Did you know, when you interrupt insulation with wood or steel framing the Effective R-value of the insulation decreases significantly? Engineers and Architects refer to this as “Thermal Bridging”.

ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers) states thermal bridging for wood studs reduce the Effective R-value of fibreglass insulation by approximately 35% and steel studs by 65%.  With 16″ O.C. steel studs, R-20 fibreglass insulation has an effective R-Value of only R-7.1.
